An attractive red brick facade and a large green door illuminated by Victorian-style lamps lead guests into a busy interior that mixes stunning modern design with more than a few nods to the Great Scotland Yard Hotel’s story-laden past. Myriad art defines the reception, a haven of friendly service and west London glamour, with a near-constant lean toward the building’s police heritage — with nods to infamous criminals, historical uniforms and evidence used as art-froward props throughout the common areas of the hotel.

151 rooms, a stunning standalone 5-floor townhouse (a presidential suite and a half) and 11 accessible rooms continue the police theme with badges and uniforms and subtle police blue furnishings, while Japanese loos and wardrobes hidden behind bookshelves lend a playful note to some of the room choices. Rooms come equipped with large beds, a well-stocked mini bar, and generously sized bathrooms complete with large mirrors and walk-in showers. But if you’re feeling particularly lavish opt for No1 The Townhouse, the hotel’s Grade II-listed private residence, a discreet presidential suite with its own butler, the townhouse’s original log burners and a ten-seat dining room.

Great Scotland Yard’s Ekstedt At the Yard restaurant tempts diners with an intriguing mix of Scandinavian cooking techniques and seasonal British ingredients, brought to life by Michelin-starred chef Niklas Ekstedt in a refined yet relaxed kitchen scented by a fire pit and a wood stove. But a better option for afternoon tea is the stunning Parlour, whose comprehensive tea collection is enhanced by head pastry chef Verónica Garrido Martínez’s multi-sensory Afternoon Tea, inspired by the “Platinum 22 Eau De Parfum” by iconic British perfumery Floris London.

Meanwhile, expertly crafted cocktails inspired by the 19th-century writings of William Terrington (one of the first authors to publish a cocktail book in the UK) are shaken to life in the 40 Elephants cocktail bar, a late evening haunt ideal for a romantic rendezvous. Sibín on the other hand attempts to recreate the anti-establishment drinking dens of 17th-century Ireland with a delightful array of whisky and moonshine cocktails, as well as drinks flights with creative food pairings. Travellers hoping to keep fit may take advantage of the Great Scotland Yard Hotel’s small but comprehensive fitness centre, with modern cardio equipment and strength training machines available 24 hours a day, while Business travellers have access to an informal meeting space.

Furthermore, the hotel’s design extends an inclusive welcome to all guests, with strobe light smoke detectors, wide doors, lowered peepholes and light switches, as well as accessible bathrooms for guests with additional needs. Located on the doorstep of Embankment and Covent Garden, on the site of the former headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, and straddling the much-storied Whitehall and Northumberland Avenue, the Great Scotland Yard hotel is ideal for the sights of Central London and the riverside. Stroll into Covent Garden for dinner or see a show in the West End and finish your evening in a basement cocktail bar in Soho. To see more of London, the Thames Clipper and the London Underground are just a short walk away.
