Bhutan, the Himalayan Kingdom known for its evocative temples, stunning scenery and a fine cloak of mystery, has few hotels as conveniently located as Zhiwa Ling Heritage. Arriving by air brings you to Bhutan’s only international airport, and from there, it’s a 15-minute transfer to the stunning western landscapes of Bhutan, where you’ll find the Zhiwa Ling Heritage Hotel. Convenient as this is, it isn’t Zhiwa Ling’s main selling point, as the 45 rooms face the vast cliffs that surround the captivating Tiger’s Nest Temple, inviting exploration of the hotel’s 10 acres, hiding everything from an in-house temple and tea house to a yoga studio and a cocktail bar. The locally owned hotel’s style is classical Bhutanese, with a hand-painted, facade with hand-carved cornices, and interiors finished with local weavings to make colourful bed covers, rugs and drapery, that, along with local arts and large windows with tumbling mountain views, offset the otherwise minimalist rooms magnificently. The Zhiwa Ling Heritage’s rooms are accessible via external corridors and open up to the sweeping cinematics of the Paro landscapes with balconies and terraces, each with an iconic Himalayan view. Every room has an en suite bathroom with a separate bath and shower and all the usual 5* amenities are present (free wifi, daily housekeeping, international entertainment, etc).

Zhiwaling commits to sustainability with various in-house programs and has a strong conservation ethos along with a bespoke sustainable tourism program and a carbon management policy, but it’s the hotel’s commitment to Bhutan’s concept of GHN (gross national happiness) that sets it apart. This means the hotel invests heavily in its staff, with learning opportunities and welfare interactions, and on a community level through community support projects, hotel recycling projects, and wildlife conservations. The Zhiwa Ling Heritage Hotel has the main Lingka restaurant, which serves a good selection of Bhutanese specialities by a well-trained team of locals, keen to show off the best bits of Bhutanese cuisine, as well as a private dining concept in Gawa, which serves a more refined menu expertly curated by Zhiwa Ling’s head chef. The in-house bar is named after Drupka Kunley, aka The Mad Monk and serves Bhutanese rice wines, international wines and beers and a collection of cocktails that utilise local ingredients to perfection. The tea house is a fabulous spot to learn a little local culture, via a tea-making ceremony to make delicious Bhutanese butter tea. The Zhiwa Ling Heritage Spa enjoys a particularly pretty position in the hotel with elevated views of the lush mountain topography, a perfect spot to work on everything from mindfulness and meditation to yoga. Yoga lessons are often taught by visiting Yogi from across the world, as well as local teachers, though the studio is available for private use too, should you prefer.

Can’t miss experiences

The national sport of Bhutan is archery and the Zhiwa Ling Heritage Hotel offers various ways to partake. You can learn from a local archery master, or simply observe amongst the beauty of the Paro landscapes.
